East Coast Title And Japan Trip For Yamaha Racers

Two of the Australian Karting Association's longest standing categories, Clubman and Junior National, have been selected to compete for an East Coast Title in conjunction with the 2010 Australian CIK Championship.

The two categories have been chosen by series organisers to provide competitors an opportunity to gain experience while competing on Australia's biggest karting stage alongside the top level of karting in the country.

"There is no doubt that the Clubman and Junior National categories are the backbone of our sport and by having these categories compete in conjunction with the CIK Championship it allows these drivers to get a taste of competing on the same card as the top drivers in our sport," said series organiser Peter Galvin.

With the Clubman category for senior drivers set to be contested at a minimum weight of 150kg and the Junior National at 125kg it provides the opportunity for both the Light and Heavy classes, normally contested across the country, to compete in the series.

Adding further incentive for competitors is the fact that the winner of the Clubman class will receive a trip to Japan to compete in the All Japan Kart Championships. There will also be a number of other prizes distributed to competitors in both categories throughout the year.

"We've been looking for an event or series that best suits Yamaha to provide the opportunity for a competitor to win a spot on the grid in the Annual All Japan Kart Championships and in 2010 it looks as though we have found it," said Yamaha’s National Kart & Power Products Sales & Marketing Manager Adam Wolfenden.

"The East Coast Title provides the opportunity for a competitor with a stepping stone from their local level of competition to the elite division and we are very excited about the future prospects for the series."

The opening event in the four round 2010 Australian CIK Championship, incorporating the KF2, KZ2 and KF3 categories, is scheduled for Newcastle on March 5-7.

About the Australian CIK Championship

The CIK (Commission Internationale de Karting) is the specialised Karting commission of the FIA, the governing body of world motor sport.

The Australian CIK Championship is the elite level of karting competition in the country.

Competitors in the Championship utilise equipment similar to that used in the European and World Championships in each of the three categories KF2, KZ2 and KF3. Karting is one of only four motor sport disciplines that enjoy an FIA World Championship.

The 2010 series will be run over four rounds with the opening round in Newcastle (Mar 5-7) followed by Ipswich (May 7-9), Sydney's Eastern Creek (June 18-20) ahead of the finale at Melbourne's Todd Road circuit on August 6-8.

Running in conjunction with the championship will be the Clubman and Junior National categories where competitors will be vying for the honour of becoming the East Coast Title holder. There will also be another 'local' class contested at each of the rounds.

Former Champions of the Australian CIK Series include V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom, Ryan Briscoe, Michael Caruso, Tim Slade, Troy Hunt, Andrew Thompson, Phillip Scifleet and Christian Jones.
