Local Lad Wins At Territory Titles

Darwin teenager Brodie Green took a popular victory in the Northern Territory Karting Championships held at the Hidden Valley Karting Complex over the weekend.

Green, who was the lone local driver to prove victorious at the championships, won the Junior National Light title ahead of Cairns driver Aidan Wright and Gold Coaster Troy Morrisey.

The victory marked the 14 year-old’s second major championship of his career after he became the first Territorian to win a state title event last year in Karratha, Western Australia – much to the delight of his father Steve.

“It has been a big weekend for the Green family, my brother won the Darwin Street Stock Speedway Title on Saturday night and then Brodie won on Sunday. I’m over the moon,” said Steve Green.

“Brodie started from position six in the final and picked up positions one by one before getting to the lead. At one stage the guys in second and third closed were closing in on him but when they started to battle amongst themselves it allowed him to clear away again.

“I’m sure that I was more nervous watching on the sidelines that he was behind the wheel.”

The Year 9 student at Dripstone High School believes last weekend’s victory has given him confidence for further success in the future and he’s got his sights set on the National Championship when it comes to Darwin in 2012.

“Over the next two years I’ll be bugging Dad to do more travelling so I can race against more of the best drivers from across the country and get more experience before they all come here for the Nationals in 2012,” said the third generation racer.

In the other categories it was Gold Coaster Lucas Ward who won Junior Clubman for the second consecutive year. After overcoming an issue in qualifying Ward showed superior speed to claim the win ahead of Wright and South Australian Todd Hazelwood.

Also competing in the Junior National Heavy category, Hazelwood proved too good for Victorian Matthew McLellan and Adelaide driver Simon Hodge.

Bunbury youngster Joshua Wood proved too good in the Midgets category to take a clean sweep on his way to the championship victory, as did Victorian Josh DeMaio in Rotax Light, Gladstone’s John Grother in Leopard Light and Western Australian Kip Foster in the Clubman Heavy class.

Kurt Kostecki and Ashley Pittard racked up another two wins for the West Aussie contingent in the Rookies and Clubman Super categories.

South Australian Nicholas Holmes-Karavas proved too good in the Clubman Light category to cross the line ahead of Nathan Davis and Ben Stewart.
