May Is Eyeing Off His Next Challenge

Gold Coast kart racer Scott May is eyeing off the next challenge in his karting career as he gets set to contest the Pro Junior(KF3) category in the 2010 CIK Stars of Karting Series.

May started his career behind the wheel of a kart some five years ago when his father, Allan, wanted to teach his youngster some good driving habits at an early age.

“I’ve always been interested in motorsport, so when Scott began to show an interest I saw karting as the safest and most educational way for him to go racing” said Allan May.

“We had some friends who were racing karts and after spending some time with them Scott and I were instantly hooked - in his case because of the fun he could have racing while for me it was the fact that karting could teach him driving techniques well before he could get his drivers licence.”

Having won a couple of Club Championships in the South East Queensland region and regularly running inside the top ten at State Championships across the country May is excited about the year ahead.

The 14 year-old will compete in the elite series aboard a Kosmic kart with guidance from one of the country’s top line drivers, William Yarwood.

“William has been a mentor to me for a number of years now and I’m really looking forward to working with him, along with Jon Targett – who will be my engine tuner, and Dale Verrall of Pacific Kartsport throughout the series,” said May.

“I feel as though the CIK series is a way of stepping up to the next challenge against some of the best drivers from across the country.”

The CIK Stars of Karting Series will kick off in Newcastle on March 5-7 and will incorporate championships for the Pro Light (KF1), Pro Gearbox (KZ2) and Pro Junior (KF3) categories.

Competitors in the Pro Light category will use the 125cc IAME KF specification engine, as used in the 2009 championship that was won by Newcastle driver Hayden McBride. The Pro Gearbox drivers will take to the track powered by a six-speed 125cc gearbox machine while the Pro Junior drivers will use a 125cc Vortex KF3 specification engine.

Running in conjunction with the series will also be a Clubman and Junior National category, where competitors will be vying for the East Coast Title, along with one class chosen by the host club.
