Nelson Shows The Way In Mackay

Gold Coast-based driver Brendan Nelson showed his opposition a clean pair of wheels during round two of the Supercheap Auto kart racing Series in Mackay over the weekend.

Nelson, a former state champion, was lapping the Mackay circuit almost half a second faster than his competitors in the Leopard Heavy category before taking out the final race ahead of Matt Dicinoski, who was the fastest qualifier in the class.

“Matt gave me a bit of a wake up call in qualifying but after we made a few changes and I was able to pick up the pace,” said Nelson.

“This weekend gives me some good confidence entering the state championships here in July.”

The Doyle’s Kartsport driver continued his winning ways in the Clubman category when he was victorious ahead of Gladstone’s Cian Fothergill in the largest field of the event.

Nelson took a narrow victory in the opening race ahead of former Junior Clubman National Champion Chris Hays, while Hays failed to finish the second race, the action remained intense at the front of the field throughout the day.

In the end it was Nelson however, who proved superior to claim the win over Fothergill and local driver Justin Garioch.

“Clubman was a great battle all day with some of the best drivers suiting up to get valuable track time before the state titles,” said Nelson.

“Today’s win gives me some confidence but I’m not too confident as the event is certain to attract a heap more top line drivers from across the country.”

Local driver Alistair Ingram continues to develop as a star of the future as he benefits from the experience he is gaining in Australia’s elite karting series, the CIK Stars of Karting Series. Yesterday, despite still battling the effects of pneumonia he finished second behind Jordan Page. Scott Haynes finished third.

In the class for the youngest drivers, the Midgets class where drivers are between seven and ten years of age, it was Declan Boyle who was victorious over Harrison Oddie and Declan Fraser.

Sam Taylor took out the Junior Clubman category ahead of Sam Lumsden while Jordan McGregor won the Rookies class, Luke Lane proved too good in the Leopard Light and as was Shannon Price in the Senior National category.
