State Honours On The Line In Melbourne Next Weekend

01 February 2010

State honours are on the line next weekend (February 12-14) when drivers from all across the country converge on the Oakleigh karting circuit to compete at the 2010 Victorian Open Sprint Kart Championships.

Over 300 competitors, ranging in age from seven to over 50 years old, are set to battle for the honour of being crowned the state champion in their respective category at the prestigious event.

Drivers such as multiple-time Australian Champions David Sera (Narre Warren) and Matthew Wall (Sunbury) will once again fly the flag for the local drivers. Other Victorian drivers expected to figure prominently will be Macauley Jones, the Pringle brothers - Jason and Rick, Adam Hughes, Jordan Sanderson and Lee Mitchener.

Out to prove karting isn't just a sport for the boys will be female hotshots Teagan Osborne, Brittany Hall, Chelsea Angelo and Elle Brydon along with youngsters Nikola Mitic and Brandi Angelo who will be competing in the Midgets class - for drivers between seven and ten years of age.

Since gaining the right to host the 2010 Championships members of the Oakleigh Go Kart Racing Club have been working feverously to ensure the venue is in perfect condition for the event.

"Over the past twelve months we have completed over $100,000 worth of improvements to the facility including additional spectator grandstands and the resurfacing of several parts of the track," said Club President Wayne Harper.

"We've had a group of members who have worked tirelessly over the past few months, led by our previous president Adam Bourke, to ensure everything is readiness for our biggest event of the year."

The Oakleigh venue is one of the longest standing venues in Australian karting and has played a part in the careers of a number of today's modern day V8 Supercar drivers including Jamie Whincup, Steven Richards and both Alex and Will Davison.

Practice for the championships will begin next Wednesday (February 10) ahead of qualifying on Friday, heat races Saturday and the championship finals on Sunday.
